Connecting the wifi extender to the router via WPS is the easiest way possible. If your wifi extender has the WPS button then you can connect it to the router very easily. First, you have to plug it into the power adapter and press the WPS switch which is at the front part of the extender. The WPS button is located at the back part of the router and switch it on by pressing it.
In a few seconds, both devices will be connected and upon successful connection, the blinking led on the wifi extender will turn stable green.
But in case your wifi extender does not have the WPS button how do you connect it to the router? There are a few ways other than the WPS method to connect the Wifi extender and the Router.
Ways to Connect Your WiFi Extender to Router Without WPS
If you want to extend the range of your home WiFi network but don’t have a WPS-equipped router, don’t worry – you can still connect your WiFi extender to your wifi router without WPS.
To get started, you will need to have a WiFi extender and a router. If you don’t have a WiFi extender, you can check out our list of the best WiFi extenders. Once you have all the necessary equipment, you can follow any of the methods below to connect your WiFi extender to the router.
Here’s how to connect Wifi Extender to the Router:
1. Connect Through a Laptop
The first method to connect wifi extender to a router is through a laptop/computer. First, plug in the wifi extender to a power outlet. Switch it on and you will see a yellow button blinking which means it is searching for a wifi network.
The next step is to open up the network and internet settings on your laptop or desktop and look for all the networks available to connect. Search for your wifi extender by its name i.e. if it is a TP-Link wifi extender then it may be available as TP_LINK_EXTENDER(usually the brand name is the default in the network name.
Now click on connect and it will take a few seconds before being connected to the network. Once you are connected to the wifi extender network it is time to log in to the wifi extender by creating an account and logging in. To create an account you have to go to the login page of the wifi extender.
Open up the network and Internet Settings and click on the connected wifi extender network. Click on the properties tab and you will see a range of numbers and figures. Out of all those data we need to take only the IPv4 figures. In the image shown the IPv4 is 192.168.43.220. It is the default address of the wifi extender.
Next, connect your computer to the extender via Ethernet. Once connected, open a web browser and enter the extender’s IP address into the address bar. This will usually be something like ‘192.168.1.1’ or ‘192.168.0.1’.
Enter the Default login credentials if you’re prompted for a username and password. These will usually be ‘admin’ for the username and ‘password’ for the password
Now click on the start button and it will start scanning for your internet connection. Connect to your wifi network, enter any router password and click connect. Once connected you can start using wifi extender network on your mobile phones and laptops. You will see all green lights on the wifi extender to confirm whether it is connected and extended.
2. Connect Through Mobile App
The next method is to connect your wifi extender to your router through a mobile application. If you are using an android phone then go to Google play store and search for tether. You will find many applications like TP-Link tether, Tetrd, Netshare, etc.
You can use this mobile app to connect the extender to the router. In this case, we have chosen Tp-link Tether for example purposes. Download and install the app on your phone. Once installed open the app and create a new account to log in. You have to verify your account through email, once done you can log in to the app.
Once logged in you will see no devices found message, now click on the add device button at the bottom. It will start scanning for the wifi extender, and once detected it will ask to create a login username and password. Once completed it will start scanning for your home network connection, select from the available network connections.
It will prompt you to enter your router’s password, enter the details and click on next and click on apply settings then it will take a few seconds before finally getting connected.
Search for the available internet connections, you will find the wifi extended network with _EXT at the end. To confirm whether the wifi extender is successfully connected to the router check the led indicators, you will see all green lights.
Connect to the network and enjoy the internet.
